Bumthang as a cultural center has great many to offer in terms of religious sites, sacred caves, breathtaking landscape and cool pristine environment. Bumthang Owl Trek is a three day trek starting from Menchugang and ends at Tharpaling Dratsang above Chumey valley. The highlight of this trek is Dhur Village, Mount Gangkar Phuensum, the endangered Himalayan Tragopan, high mountain views, exotic flora and fauna and from April to early June trails of rhododendron flowers all along the trek route. However, trekkers should watch out and beware of the Himalayan Black bears.  The hauling of owls throughout on the first night is quite common, hence the name Owl Trek.

Accommodation/your night Camps

Camping in extreme weather such as cold temperatures and snowy conditions can be extremely enjoyable; Camping by the snow can be peaceful, picturesque and out door adventure. 

All the accommodation while on Druk Path Trek is twin sharing, double occupancy (Single occupancy with supplement) in the Tents. The tents are Cold Weather Tents and designed for harsh weather and snowy conditions. A separate tents will be pitched for dinning and rest room. 

On demand, a luxury tents will also be provided like bed and mattresses, warm shower tents, rest room with proper toilet pots, fishing equipment etc..

During the Trek

  • Clothes:  Waterproof jacket and pants. You really don't need thick heavy clothes. As always, trekking in layers is better. 
  • Bag pack with rain cover for bagpack
  • Water bottles (at least 3 liters total capacity)
  • Baseball cap (the sun is strong at all elevations)
  • Hiking poles (lessen the impact on your joints)
  • Sunglasses (essential when you cross snow line)
  • Trekking shoes: A pair of lightweight-waterproof hiking boots is a must. Break them in beforehand
  • Winter hat
  • Winter gloves

At the Camp Site 

  • Head lamp with extra batteries
  • A pair of Camp shoes too.
  • Thermal underwear and can be useful in the mornings, or for sleeping in at night. If you forgot some, jogging pants are widely available in all towns for less cost
  • Reading materials (Kindle may be best)
  • Journal and pens

 Day 1 Menchugang to Dhur

LayaGasa Trek

The inhabitants of the village are the Kheps and Brokpas (nomads). This village has two different dialects, the usual Bumthang Kha and the Brokke (nomadic dialects).  Near the river is a traditional water-driven flour mill which used to be a source of livelihood for the people of Dhur village. Spend some time here and explore the remote Dhur village. Resuming the trek is the uphill climb through the blue pine forest towards the campsite at Schonath (3450m) amongst hemlock and juniper forest.  Apart from the sounds of insects, the hauling of owls throughout the night is quite common.

Day 2

Dhur to Kitiphu

LayaGasa Gunitsawa

Today you will trek through fresh forest of hemlock, fir, spruce and soak in the beauty of many species of rhododendron which are in full bloom during the months of April and May. You will be walking through shrub bamboo which is the main undergrowth in these parts.

After about two hours of walking you will arrive at the Drangela Pass (3600m). You will camp at Kitiphu ridge at an altitude of about 3870. From the campsite you can enjoy spectacular views of the snow capped mountains and valleys underneath. The main treat is the stunning view of mount Gangkar Phuensum (7541m), the highest unclimbed peak in the world

Day 3

Kitiphu - Kikila - Bumthang

On the last day of your trek you will descend towards the monasteries of Zambhalha, Chuedak and Tharpaling. Chuedak monastery has 100 Avoloketeshvaras in the form of Chukchizhey (eleven heads) where you may pray for yourself and all living beings. You might even stop for a sip of holy water which are a plenty around this place to quench your thirst, wash your sins and purify your body and soul.

Towards the afternoon the trek will take you along the ridge of Kikila and following the traditional trek route between Trongsa and Bumthang (the Royal Heritage Trail) through scenic hills and forests. Your trek will finally end with a grand view of Jakar Dzong
