The trekking route into Merak and Sakteng is a truly exotic cultural journey into the unique life and culture of the Brokpas (ethnic Highlanders) and into a land suspended in time and brace yourself to experience Bhutan in its truly wild beauty. With elevation differences of 1812 meters and nearly 3517 meters, it offers a wide range of landscape ,fauna and flora. The highlight of this trek is the spectacular villages of Merak and Sakteng.  One should be reasonably physically fit to enjoy the majestic mountain views, endure thin air, serenity & the wilderness of the landscape while on the trek.

On the trek you will traverse through the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, set up to protect the elusive Yeti. Moreover, the Sanctuary is home to a diverse variety of flora and fauna like the highly endangered Snow Leopard and Red Panda, Himalayan Black Bear, Barking Deer, Himalayan Red Fox, Blood Pheasant, Grey Headed Woodpecker, Dark Breasted Rosefinch and many others.

Accommodation/your night Camps

Camping in extreme weather such as cold temperatures and snowy conditions can be extremely enjoyable; Camping by the snow can be peaceful, picturesque and out door adventure. 

All the accommodation while on Druk Path Trek is twin sharing, double occupancy (Single occupancy with supplement) in the Tents. The tents are Cold Weather Tents and designed for harsh weather and snowy conditions. A separate tents will be pitched for dinning and rest room. 

On demand, a luxury tents will also be provided like bed and mattresses, warm shower tents, rest room with proper toilet pots, fishing equipment etc..

During the Trek

  • Clothes:  Waterproof jacket and pants. You really don't need thick heavy clothes. As always, trekking in layers is better. 
  • Bag pack with rain cover for bagpack
  • Water bottles (at least 3 liters total capacity)
  • Baseball cap (the sun is strong at all elevations)
  • Hiking poles (lessen the impact on your joints)
  • Sunglasses (essential when you cross snow line)
  • Trekking shoes: A pair of lightweight-waterproof hiking boots is a must. Break them in beforehand
  • Winter hat
  • Winter gloves

At the Camp Site 

  • Head lamp with extra batteries
  • A pair of Camp shoes too.
  • Thermal underwear and can be useful in the mornings, or for sleeping in at night. If you forgot some, jogging pants are widely available in all towns for less cost
  • Reading materials (Kindle may be best)
  • Journal and pens

 Day 1 Trashigang to Donmong River

19 Km, 7 1/2 hours - 2217m ascend and 230 m descend

Camp Altitude:

LayaGasa TrekThe drive from Trashigang till the road end in Chaling is scenic and serene through Rangjung town and Monastery. From Chaling you will start your actual trek and gradually climb through beautiful Shaktimi Meadow and catch glimpses of yak and sheep grazing till you reach Mendula Pass. A short walk through beautiful rhododendron trees will take you to your campsite on a meadow by the Donmong chhu river.Day 2:  Donmongchhu River to Merak. 

Day 2

Donmongchhu River to Merak

Camp Altitude:

LayaGasa GunitsawaToday you will reach your first destination, the village of Merak. It's a pleasant walk by the Donmong river and through rhododendron trees and undergrowths. First you will reach Gangu village and another hour walk will take you to Merak. Soak in the beauty and serenity of Merak, meet the Brokpas, and visit their homes. You can either camp or stay in the tourist guesthouse.

Day 3

Merak to Miksateng

Camp Altitude:

LayaGasa SoethangkhaToday is a moderately tough trek crossing few smaller passes and the highest pass on this trek the Nachungla Pass at 4153m. You will walk through small ridges, juniper and rhododendron trees till you reach Miksateng village campsite

Day 4

Miksateng to Sakteng

14 kms, 5 hours, 81m ascend and 310m descent

LayaGasaTrek JangothangToday is a easy enough trek with short climbs, crossing a river and walking through beautiful woods. Stop for a while at the small stupa/Chorten on top of the hill overlooking Sakteng village. You can either camp in a meadow by the riverside or at the tourist guesthouse.

Halt at Sakteng

LayaGasa JumolhariBaseTake the day off and explore the beautiful valley of Sakteng and their surroundings. In the evening, the Brokpas of Sakteng will perform a special cultural program for you. The Brokpas of Sakteng are similar to Merak in their culture and traditions.

Day 6

Sakteng to Joenkhar Teng

LayaGasaTrek MtJichuDrakeySince you will be walking for almost 7 hours you will start early today. However the walking is easy with few downhill and plain grounds by the riverside. The campsite is inside a beautiful meadow near the riverside. Jongkhar Teng village is located on a hillside and comprises of both Brokpas and Sharchops. 

Day 7

Joenkhar Teng to Phongmey and Trashigang

Camp Altitude:

LayaGasaTrek LingzhiLayaOn the last day of your Merak Sakteng Trek, you will cross few suspension bridges and a short walk will take you to Phongmey. Your vehicle and driver awaits to take you to your hotel.

 

 

What to expect while trekking:

  1. Treking Travel Difficulty: The average elevation in Bhutan is 3200m above Sea level and this tour is moderately challenging.
  2. Trekking Difficulty : At times, you will be camping above 4000 m. As this is a difficult high alittude trek, this may not be suitable for those prone to cardiac arrests, respiratory, or circulatory disorders, or for limited mobility. 
  3. Includes major sight seeings and all possible nature hikes
  4. The package includes stay in 3 star hotels in Bhutan as approved by Tourism Council of Bhutan. Our Best Choice is Bhutan Suites and Thimphu Tower in Thimphu, Bhutan Mandala Resort in Paro, Wangdue Ecolodge in Wangduephodrang and Hotel Dewachen in Phobjikha. We have the flexibility of incoproating  your choice of hotels as well.
